20 Common Work At Home Terminology

Here is a list of common work at home terms and their definitions.

Affiliate – A person who markets a merchant’s service or product and is paid a commission on a sale. Common affiliate marketplaces are Clickbank, CJ, and LinkShare.

Article Marketing – An individual who writes articles related to their business and submit them to various article directories or niche websites.

Blog – An online journal. It’s much more than sharing your personal experiences or thoughts. It is now largely used by corporate websites and people promoting their business.

Cold Calling – It’s the process of making unsolicited calls to potential customers.

Direct Sales – An individual who promotes and deals with customers directly in selling of their products. This can be done via home parties, one-on-one home product demonstrations or through other contact settings. In many Direct Sales companies it’s not necessary to recruit to earn an income.

Downline – In multilevel marketing (MLM) it is people who you have referred.

Drop Shipping – The seller accepts the payment, but the customer receives the product directly from the manufacturer.

Freelancer – A worker who is not committed to any one employer.

Home-Based – To work from home, but may have to travel to provide their service.

Independent Contractor – A person who is not an employee of the company, but one provides a service for the company under a written contract or agreement. It is also someone who is self-employed.

Multilevel Marketing/MLM – It is a system which involves recruiting of distributors to sell a product or service.

Networking – Connecting offline or online in various social settings with other business-minded people in sharing common interests or uncovering new opportunities.

RSS – Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. It is often seen on blogs, news-related websites and forums.

Search Engine Optimization/SEO – It’s the process of making a site and its content rank highly in search engines using keywords or keyword phrases relevant to a site’s content.

SAHM/SAHD – Acronym for stay at home mom and stay at home dad.

Telecommute – To work at home (WAH) or another remote location that is not your employer’s place of business using a computer, Internet, phone or fax. Other terms include WFH (work from home), remote, virtual, and telework.

Upline – In multilevel marketing (MLM) the person who referred you also known as your sponsor.

Virtual Assistant/VA – Provides administrative, clerical, technical or managerial services for clients from their own home.

Web 2.0 – A second generation trend in Internet based services that involves blogging, social media, wikis, social bookmarking, podcasts, RSS feeds etc.

WAHM/WAHD – Acronym for work at home mom and work at home dad.
